The Regata Storica (Historical Regatta) is an annual event, that from time immemorable, is held on the first Sunday of September.
In this occasion, various regattas are held along the Grand Canal and, if you do not share the passion for rowing, the Regata Storica can be a sort of endless torture.
However, I still recommend that you should see it at least once.
Obviously, it will not be easy to hire a gondola so that you can watch all the races that take place on this day, especially if you happened to be in Venice on this day by chance. However, you can still admire this spectacle, seated comfortably in the Grand Canal.
You can book a seat at the Traghetto of San Tomà, whose excellent position allows you to see not only the finish of every race, but gives you the rare privilege of being seated near the Officialís Stand, where you can not only catch a glimpse of the Mayor and his followers, but also the president of the italian republic, other important political figures, and more recently a miriad of movie stars who find themselves in Venice at the same time for the Venice Film Festival.
