The army of 525 people (425 gondoliers and 100 substitutes) is governed in the following way:
All the gondoliers are part of a traghetto, or are at least included within the territory in which they operate.
There are 10 Traghetti in Venice in which the actual number of members fluctuates and varies depending upon their specific duties and their capacity to face the flux of tourists.
Each traghetto has their own regulations, and they are upheld by the elected representatives or bancali, whose term is renewed every 2 years. By regulation, there is one bancale for every 10 gondoliers in every traghetto.
The bancali from all the traghetti, in their turn, elect their representative the President of Bancali whose responsibility it is to represent the category of the gondoliers to the official authorities and to other administrative bodies.
This appointment is renewed every two years.
