I should remind you that once upon a time, there was another type of gondolier, quite distinct from the one that we know today, and whose members were not subject to the regulations of the Traghetti, but who were all united in a corporation that inlcluded only the gondoliers that were employed by wealthy families, mostly patrician.
These gondoliers lived inside the palaces or in the houses owned by the wealthy families for whom they worked.
Today, times have changed, and this trade is almost extinct, and only manages to survive only through the Most Noble Casa Marcello, who sometimes uses their own gondola.
The gondolier is dressed in the livery, that carry the colours and the coat of arms of this illustrous family.
